I study the implications of new technologies such as electric propulsion and autonomy on the design of aircraft and on aviation markets. My research interests include:

  • Operations research and market studies for urban air mobility (UAM), on-demand mobility (ODM), and new modes of regional aviation

  • Flight performance and sizing of electric aircraft

  • Aerodynamics, performance, and design of distributed electric propulsion configurations

  • Wind tunnel and flight tests of subscale CTOL, STOL, and VTOL aircraft

  • Optimization of aircraft designs and aircraft operations

To hear my thoughts on the potential for battery electric propulsion for urban air mobility, take a look at the video below from a recent Forum 360 panel at AIAA SciTech 2018. My remarks begin at 28:10, but if you are just learning about this emerging topic, it could be worthwhile to watch the entire video.
